The Numbers We Cannot Ignore

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) – Crime in India 2023, 4,48,211 cases of crimes against women were registered across India during 2023—an average of more than 1,225 cases every day, or approximately one case every 70 seconds.

What These Numbers Mean
These figures are not merely statistics—they represent mothers, daughters, sisters, colleagues, students, and friends whose lives have been affected by violence, fear, and injustice.
One particularly concerning finding is that domestic violence remains the largest reported crime against women, accounting for nearly 30% of all registered cases. This highlights that danger often exists not only in public spaces but also within homes.
Similarly, rape, sexual harassment, stalking, cyber abuse, and trafficking continue to threaten women’s safety across both urban and rural India. The rapid growth of digital technology has also led to an increase in cyber bullying, online blackmail, fake social media profiles, revenge pornography, identity theft, and online sexual exploitation, making digital safety as important as physical safety.
Beyond the Numbers
Many experts believe these figures do not capture the full reality. A significant number of women never report incidents due to fear of social stigma, family pressure, threats, financial dependence, or lack of confidence in the justice system. Therefore, the true extent of gender-based violence is likely to be much higher than official records indicate.
